WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Thursday marked the 82nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor and one historic building in downtown Wilmington is remembering that day.

Public officials along with residents gathered at the Hannah Block Historic USO building to hear stories of what Wilmington was like at the time before Pearl Harbor happened. The afternoon the attacks happened in Wilmington, the city’s population was 34,000 and 43,000 lived in New Hanover County. Three Wilmington Navy Sailors were also killed in those attacks.

Local author and historian Wilbur Jones says it’s important to remember the Pearl Harbor attacks because it serves as a reminder of the current affairs of the United States.

“Wilmington needs to remember, our children need to remember that we let our guard down. We were not ready for what was an inevitable attack and put it in the context of today and our potential enemies that we have around the world.”

Jones added that according to the President of the United States and Secretary of the Interior, Wilmington is honored as America’s first World War II heritage city.
