WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This could be the year Wilmington is recognized as an “American World War II City.”
Congressman David Rouzer has reintroduced H.R. 1721, a bill that would designate at least one city in the U.S. each year with that title, with Wilmington being the first.
This effort first began years ago, with local historian Captain Wilbur Jones behind the push. He partnered with Rep. Mike McIntyre, who first introduced similar legislation in 2011.
According to a news release from the Congressman’s office, due to the hard work and dedication of Jones, this idea and introduction of this bill came to fruition due to his years of work.
“I would like to thank Captain Wilbur Jones for all his hard work to award Wilmington with the recognition it deserves,” said Rep. David Rouzer. “The city of Wilmington was regarded as the defense capital of the state during World War II with major industries supporting the war’s efforts – including shipbuilding, fertilizer plants, agriculture, manufacturing and clothing factories. Due to its major contributions, this bill will ensure that Wilmington, as well as other cities with significant WWII history, will be given the distinction the residents and communities deserve,”
This bill passed the House last year, but not the Senate.
